A Social Conscience?
words & music Ed Hooke, 1983    -     Ed Hooke 1983

A Social Conscience? - or not......
Sometimes in my songwriting
I have challenged myself
to express feelings
which I feel uncomfortable with.

This song was inspired
while walking home one evening
to my bedsit in Manor House
(Finsbury Park, London) in 1983,
not long after moving
from Southampton to London

Worn out shoes, newspaper-stuffed, on cold feet, trudging pavements
hidden from the darkness by this strange pinky-orange light.

Newer shoes on warmer feet hurrying on their way.
These are mine.

But I feel no guilt.
It's nothing to do with me.
I don't want to see posters of starving children, a third world away
inbetween the posters for fine wines and records.
That reminds me what I meant to buy if I could just afford it.
Self-justification means sanity at the end of the day.

I feel no guilt.
The problem is the world's.
It's too big for me to solve.

Just one of millions just about getting by
Never satisfied.
Never quite.
